ADDITIONAL NOTES:

though the daily news is no longer at 220 east 42nd st, its original lobby is a nook of new york that has everlasting lore.
In Raymond Hood's original design, the lobby was conceived as a darkly lit circular space, rising to a hemispherical dome of faceted black glass. The dome suggested the black of outer space, surrounding an enormous globe, partially sunk beneath floor level, representing the planet earth. The globe, was complemented by maps and charts in eighteen glass showcases set along the curving walls. The points of the compass were set into the floor, along with directional lines showing the distance to cities around the world.

tho they aren't all above, i've taken photos of all the factoids placed around the globe. comment if you want to see them and/or read more about it at nyc.gov, amnh.org, nyu's walk 11, or skyscrapers.com.

nice pics rion, I especially like the ones of the steps leading down into the globe. I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing the rest.

That place looks sweet, what kind of lens did you use. It looks like the lighting isn't the best, but the images llo great.

ah, it was quite darrrk. and since it was a stealth mission, this was my lens:

the trusty powershot s100! easily hidden in a back pocket or tucked up the sleeve at any urban photo op.

eric, per your request: photos of other factoids around the globe's base.

I am amazed at the clarity of the shots. I don't see any flash points, did you use a flash? on the top globe shot, how did you remain so steady to get such a sharp image? Call me jealous!
27 March 03 @ 21:32
rion is steady like a surgeon

excellent pics, Rion. this is perhaps the epitome of bizarro hyperbolic creations that in being so hideously over-the-top is able to come back full circle and somehow become 'ok' again. good thing you took pictures of it while it's still there. one day that globe will be on Antiques Roadshow. ;)
28 March 03 @ 21:34
i must admit... i'm quite driven to archive the city these days... you know, "in case".

Stunning! I had no idea that was there . . . can one just walk into the lobby still?
