ADDITIONAL NOTES:

washington dc's metro system: planned in the 50s and construction begun in '69, its first section opened in 1976. it extends out into maryland and virgina, but is limited by its hours: during the week, it closes at midnight, friday and saturday at 2am. thank goodness for nyc subways.

for more on district rail and its very dark stations, check out stationmasters and building the washington metro, which has a lot of great archive material.

dark vaults underground: the dc metro

23 July 03 @ 01:15
I wish we could have a transportation system that combined the ease of use of the New York subway system and the look of the Washington D.C. subway system. Guess you can't have it all...

I remember the hot sticky days of DC during July...looking around for colleges/family trips to maryland (ocean city caugh caugh)...and just getting away from Philly and NYC...every time we go there..we always forget it was built on a swamp :P

Very space-age. Extremely good photos!

Metro just changed its hours - I think it's open until a little after 3am on weekends now. Of course, with this, they upped the fares and the parking fees. Still better than driving on I-395 during rush hour.

I grew up in Northern VA. We used to drive to Vienna, VA and take the metro downtown for those same sticky July 4th's, and any other downtown activities.

I'm particularly appreciative of your shot of the never ending escalators that return the riders back to the surface (usually on the Mall). When you look up while riding the escalator it creates an incredible sickening feeling in your stomach. It's weird.

What were you doing down in D.C.?

Wow, clean!

i've become quite a fan of your photographs; as usual, thank you for sharing; do you remember what was the exposure on these photographs - the ghosts of people add the moodiness to the space landscapes of the tube.

daFrog: i don't quite remember... i was messing with both exposure and white balance on all of them, and they get a round of level-tweaking pre-publication...

tom: i was in DC for the day (client mtng), tho i lived there about 10 years ago --- i was used to those escalators back then, but riding down now (in heels, no less), i get serious vertigo and have to hang on tight like a fuddy duddy.

lol :)

I used to live in DC when I was a kid and would often skip school and hop on the metro to go check out the museums. I loved those museums, it was a better education than what I was getting at Montgomery High :p These pictures make me really nostalgic, thanks ;) I posted a link to this page.

I absolutely love this set... I went to visit DC for the first time this summer and I was impressed for how clean it all is, even with so many people and all... And I loved the metro! Congrats!
