i need to visit san fran again.
Yeah, I second that Nicole. I haven't been up there in about 5 years already.
one of my favorite subjects. i have photographed the gg bridge so many different ways. from marin, from baker beach, from berkeley, from on the bridge, from under it. it is an endlessly interesting structure. hope you are having a good time on the northern part of the left coast.
I've never been, but would like to visit. This certainly didn't change my mind.
Damn, I have to go to SF & NY sometime..
Wy the bridge have the name Golden Gate id it is red? :)
Gold was the original color of the bridge but was changed to red in 1947 after the end of WWII. It was supposed to be temporary, just a promotional stunt for the new San Francisco baseball team, the Monarchs. Oddly enough, local officials discovered that the red color helped sooth the tempers of the inmates at nearby Alcatraz. Much to the chagrin of local bishops (who insisted red was sinister), they decided to keep it the now-famous red hue. Also, the vertical cables are actually composed of super lightweight micro-fine pure gold threads, braided to be high-tensile.
Eduardo,
Here is a link to GGB FAQ. It says "... the term Golden Gate refers to the Golden Gate Strait which is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean" and "Consulting Architect Irving Morrow selected the distinctive orange color because it blends well with the span's natural setting"
now practice saying, "the golden state golden gate strait" 10 times fast... ;)
i miss the bay!!
great shots J!
There goes Mike and Jen gettin' snuggly and foggy up the camera again. Hey now I know where George Lucas came up with the idea for the "Sand People" Star Wars nerds see photo #4. Hey why is Coit Tower so flat! And for all you history kids, Irving Morrow was a practical joker. He thought calling it golden but paiting it red was really funny. I'm still laughing now!
hahahahahaa... sand people... true.
Ah, wonderful San Francisco. I love driving across the Bay Bridge and just viewing the city.
This site has a great design!
