ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Marina City, in 1959, is a thirty-six-million- dollar project built on only three acres of land in the heart of Chicago's Loop. A dramatic landmark in Chicago, it culminated thirty years of thought and development for Bertram Goldberg. Each of the twin, 60 story towers had 450 apartments in its upper two-thirds, with the lower third a continuous parking ramp that spirals upwards, accommodating 450 automobiles.

For many years Goldberg had felt there were advantages in the use of circular forms: the aerodynamic properties in a cylindrical high-rise structure; the structural equidistance from the center, and therefore uniform function of all parts; the absence of special corner conditions; and the creation of centrifugal or 'kinetic' spaces resulting from non-parallel walls.

The other elements of the 'city within a city' are a 16 story office building; a 1,750 seat theater and a 700 seat auditorium; stores, restaurants, bowling alleys; a gymnasium, swimming pool and skating rink; a marina for 700 small craft; and a sculpture garden at the base of the towers — all overlooking the Chicago River. -- paul heyer, via greatbuildings.com.

I believe B. Golberg sprung his idea for these wonderful pieces of architecture when sitting on the can after a filling Mexican dinner, he looked over at his toilet brushes (he always had 2, I don't know why) and ka-plow! His thought--he people at Rubbermaid are geniuses!!

Can you tell me the name of the construction company who built the Marina please?

My father's construction company, Brighton Building, was the primary builder of Marina City (Owner, Thomas J. Bowler). The architect, Bertrand Goldberg, attended my wedding in Chicago in 1996 and, sadly passed away a few years later.

Cheryl, yes very sad, he was like a father to me. I think I used to work on Tom's boat in the early 70's.

Kimberly and Larry, the residential units are privately owned condos. Many of them are rental units: studios, 1-bdrm, 2-bdrm. Rent varies widely depending on height of floor, direction of view, and of course condition of the unit and its bathroom, kitchen, etc.

I know this because I have a friend who rents out a studio and a 1-bdrm--one in each tower (she used to live there but has moved to California). If you are still interested, I could inquire about prices and availability for you. Please reply to my email address, rather than here; I was just Googling "Marina City" and was attracted to the evening photo. Thank you, photographer!

i came across your website this afternoon...just doing some research on the marina towers. to answer some people's questions, prices seem to be in the $240K-$280K range for 1br's; rents start at $800 for studios, $1200 for 1br. prices go up with view, elevation, and state of renovation. 2br's are rarely available, as there are only 64 of them in the towers (total between the two). very reasonable prices for such a historically significant building, centrally located in the middle of a major city. great photos, by the way!

my question is about a gift that was given to new tenants when the towers where new. Does any one know of a fish decanter full of Imported Italian Wine ?
