ADDITIONAL NOTES:

In fourth grade, californian kids are taught about Junipero Serra, who made his way up the cali coast building missions roughly one day's journey apart from each other. San Gabriel Arcangel was the fourth of 21 missions founded by the Franciscans between 1769 and 1823. Today, the missions are a unique part of californian history that keeps fourth grade parents up at night for weeks.

More about San Gabriel Mission's artistic and political history at athanasius.com and the whole story at californiamissions.com.

I grew up in Carmichael, CA and vividly remember learning about the spanish missions, Junipero Serra, Sir Francis Drake and the early history of California when I was in 4th Grade, Mrs. Witt's class at Charles Peck Elementary. Anyway, nice pictures, as always!

I remember as a kid building a 3-D model of Mission San Juan Capistrano. We went to Michael's or some comparable crafts store and bought some great looking minature trees, birds , paint and stuff. It was quite a project.

A lot of beautiful photos! #4 is my favorite!

I onyl recently discovered your site, but I have been pleasantly suprised by the quality of photos. Your architectural serios on NY and Chicago are amazing. The last couple of sets of the mission have the most wonderfully saturated and crisp colors. #1 and #7 are, perhaps, my favorites this time.

Wow, some great shots! I remember as a kid getting pretty freaked out on the old cemetery plot...probably too many hours watching Creature Feature.
