the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York was founded in 1785 "to provide cultural, educational, and social services to families of skilled craftsmen... and has occupied this site since 1899. Inside is the City's second oldest library, looking onto a soaring atrium. a balcony gallery features eclectic collections of locks, prints, coins, firearms and more." the lock collection is extensive and intricate, and the smell of old books permeates the building. they also boast one of the last working card catalog systems in the city.General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York

the General Society was a participant in the second annual OpenHouseNewYork, a weekend of 100 fascinating spaces and places in all five boroughs - open to the public free of charge.

i have a question, some of the open house participants don't allow interior photography, so we can take pictures inside this one then? i'll definitely visit it during the weekdays~
We visited as well, and apparently found many of the same things interesting...
