ADDITIONAL NOTES:

tokyo, japan: the senso-ji temple in tokyo's asakusa district has been the focus of a bustling marketplace for more than 400 years. the original temple was founded in the year 648 (yes, 648), two brothers fished out a small Buddha from the adjacent river. after hundreds of years, the area was damaged in earthquakes and in world war II, but was rebuilt in the following decades when asakusa became the center for art & culture, vaudville, cinema, and tokyo nightlife. in recent times, it has become a popular tourist attraction and marketplace.

more asakusa at asakusa-e.com and asakusa on flickr -- including two of my favorite asakusa photos here and here from /cosentino, (and my moblog, the tag along project).

more japan on this site. and an addendum: that first shot reminds me so much of this shot from november '03.
