ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Prague -- and a few photo notes from along the avenues of the czech capital:

• Though i find the lens frustrating for street photography, i've been trying out Mike's 50mm f1.8 lens... a cheap version of the lens i really want, the 1.8 doesn't have great optics, but it's not bad in controlled settings.

• This trip marks the first time i've really started shooting in RAW format. tho i resisted the file sizes for a long time, as Mike, Keith, Adam, and most recently Raul have professed, RAW really makes all the difference in controlling color and quality in post-production, especially in low light. after some experimenting, i've become a believer.

more prague to come. previous other places on this site.

observations along the elder avenues of the czech capital

What's the point of the 50mm when you already have an amazing 85mm -- besides the couple inches closer you can be to the subject? Is the extra .4-stop really worth it?

i just got the 1.4. so far, so good. so how much more time does RAW add to the workflow?

I really like this series, I think you really captured the colours & textures of the city. I love that Kafka appears on a tea packet (?) and the man in the fourth photo seems so stoic.

Your prague series are beautiful. Have been resisting RAW format myself, but had to experiment after seeing your results. Interesting. Thanks for the tip!

i wasn't sold on RAW until i saw the difference in low-light shooting: blotchy relic pixel data in jpgs will often become more noticeable when trying to clean up color and contrast, often ruining the shot. whereas with RAW, compression isn't creating those areas of mushed data; brightening a shot or balancing color is more fluid. it's actually improved my workflow in post because it's easier to fix problems -- tho my rebel processor is slower.

Per lenses: street shooting with the 85mm gives me the reach, good for more fixed subjects, where the 50mm (and the 28mm) can be better for capturing harder-to-predict action. For me, that would be an ideal set of primes, plus at least one versatile zoom, still to be determined.

man on the fourth picture holds a sign that says - on german! - "Jewish quarter tours". So this picture is also about history and how things change to the better. The german tourist nowadays are seriously interested in a culture their ancestors 60 years ago almost completely destroyed. Nevertheless excellent pictures Rion! Please keep on asking through your lens all around the world...
