ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Photoblogging in Paris has been challenging on a few different levels:

First, I work at home and when I go out, I'm running errands, carrying a lot, and trying to get back to my computer. (Plus, there's that whole, "I'm pregnant/tired thing.") Shooting isn't on the forefront of my mind.

Then, there's the fact that Parisians are highly aware and moderately suspicious of cameras. It's not like NYC, where people ignore you. Here, you're stared at as a tourist/intruder. It can harm the photos and personally, it's more exhausting to pull out the camera. (I've written about this before, and recently spoke with a friend/photoblogger who was visiting from NYC and also got that vibe.)

Finally, after almost seven years of photoblogging, it's difficult for me to take photos without people in them. Buildings, streetscapes, type and signs, street junk... I feel like I've done that. But at the same time, I really haven't done much of that in Paris, so I probably should still capture those authentic little daily details. It *is*, afterall, what I see and live every day.

So as a part of my 2008 new year's resolution, I'm concentrating on taking fewer photos with my cell phone, and, in turn, I'm trying to take more everyday life photos in the Paris streets with my 30D... we'll see how it turns out.

a paris profile: winter in the sun on the streets

It's what you do so well, Rion...don't let a few dirty looks deter you! ;-) Love #6

The only thing that isn't perfect about the last photo is that the man chose to be on a cell phone (so it looks) in such a perfect scene. I only hope that if I were able to enjoy that day in that exact spot, I would appreciate the moment without the addition of cell phone distractions. Regardless, you couldn't have taken better photos.

Wonderful set, all of them. The first and last photos are real kickers for me though.

love the first shot. i think i would have sacrificed part of the right side to get more of the woman in the frame. wonderful nonetheless.

This is one of the reasons I'm apprehensive about taking photos in Paris. I do take them, but I'd also like to begin capturing photos of the people there. How do you do it?

La première et la dernière de la série sortent du lot !

Hey Rion ! I def. agree with your feeling about being observed or stared at as a photographer. I found Parisians so suspicious about what you're doing with your camera, guessing (and sometimes getting it wrong) that you're taken their picture... And badly very often quite aggressive... I'm a parisian, born and raised here and i love trying to catch these everyday life in the city, with of course people included, But sadly i'm not always feeling good about using my camera in the city streets, except for the touristic areas, much more 'camera crowdy', but this is not where you catch the evryday Paris... I dont know about NYc, but i went to tokyo and was much more confident with that, as in Bangkok or other parts of Thailand, where sometimes people even come to you and try to speak with you, and even ask for you taking their portrait :o) If only we could find the same things here !

I forgo, i give a fav to the 1st and last 2 photos of your serie ;o) See ya !

rion, i love this site! i've not really had problems photographing people here in new york - except in chinatown, where a lot of people are super suspicious and get upset, which sucks because that's my absolute favorite place to shoot. maybe we should both get one of these: http://www.lordofthelens.net/servlet/Detail?no=9
